  2. Have you ever read John Keegan’s “The American Civil War”? It’s probably the best single volume history on the war I’ve ever read. Being British, he treated both sides completely objectively. That is, he never felt the need to moderate praise of Jackson because he fought in support of slavery (a sentiment I’ve seen in some books).

    He also draws fascinating parallels between the CW and WWI, showing how certain actions or attitudes from the former were precursors of how the latter would be fought.

  3. He does have a relatively defensive body posture here, as if he is somewhat indignant at your criticism.
