Revisiting an old and whacky theory

Many years ago at Fourth Street, a bunch of us sat around for too many hours and came up with the following theory: From the perspective of society, the function of art* and the function of science are identical; the difference is that the final product of science is a theory, the final product of art is an artifact.

Whenever it comes up, this theory seems to produce interesting discussion, so I am running it up the mixed metaphor to see if the cliche licks it up.

*A somewhat restrictive definition of art; excluding, for example, the performing arts.

Yay Me

I happened to notice a comment in my LJ from some months ago pointing out that last September marked 25 years since the publication of Jhereg. 25 years. Weeee!

Overall, the best summation of my career so far is something Jerry Garcia said in response to a question about the annoyances of his lifestyle. He said something like, the idea that people are willing to pay money to be entertained by me is so amazing, it would be really small of me to complain about any part of it.

Yeah. Like that.

I love this life.

Thank you, people, for making it possible.

More Shadow Unit Reruns

Man, I am so ready for the next season!  I was watching a rerun this afternoon, and there’s is this scene in the bullpen.   Wile Lau and Haf are bantering in the foreground, in the background Rhyes drops a folder in front of Brady, and Brady looks at the folder, looks at Rhyes, then just pushes it off to the side.  Rhyes nods and walks away, and that’s it.  Is there a whole story there, or what?  Anyone catch it, and have any ideas?

Murder Mystery Published

The murder mystery I wrote with my poker teacher Don Hill is being serialized on an online poker magazine called Blind Straddle.  The sample can be found here.

It’s a subscription site: you have to pay a fee to get access to the story.  I think it’s like $15.00 a year or so.   They have writers like Bob Ciaffone and Lou Krieger, as well as Adam Stemple and Chris Fox, so, while it may not be worth it just for my story, for any serious poker player it’s an easy call.
