On Adam Smith, Karl Marx, and blog updates

We’re still waiting for a few external things before the Brand! New! blog and homepage come to exist. Meanwhile, I’m about ready to declare myself done with The Wealth of Nations. While I still have several chapter to comment on, I have read them, and they do not concern aspects of political economy that interest me. Plus, at the moment, I seem to have hid the book.

I’m now reading Capital, by Marx, which Smith’s work proved a really good introduction to. I am tempted to do the annotation with it as I did with Smith, because writing that helped me bring a lot of it into focus, and because all of you Smart People gave me good perspective on the stuff I didn’t understand. But I also know that there are those who find these posts irritating, and feel they take up too much space (especially when they’re reposted on LJ, without a cut).

So, just like the revisionist who claims to lead when in fact he is following, I ask: Who wants me to take on Capital in public, and who would rather I let sleeping surplus-value lie?

Just a heads up: We’re going to be doing some fun things with the blog, and with my web site (dreamcafe.com), so the look will be changing. One thing we plan on is that the books on the blog will contain a link to discussion space here for each book (this in answer to the request about a discussion of The Rain In Spain), and in general there will be Tons Of Neat Stuff.

Reesa and Nathan have been watching re-runs of the old Addams Family TV show. I approve of this, in part because it’s refreshing to see a 60’s sitcom where one can believe the couple actually had sex. But it produced a question which has been bothering me, lo, these many days, even to interfering with my sleep. So, weary and desperate, I turn to the internet as my last hope.

Can someone tell me what “ooky” means?

As some of you know, the RSS feed isn’t working here. Now a new problem has developed: as of sometime yesterday, I can’t post comments. In order to even read the comments, I have to navigate to the administration page; somewhat like getting the output from a program by doing a core dump. I have email and phone messages in with DDB hoping to fix this. Meanwhile, pleases keep the discussions going, and I’ll jump in when I can.

Later: Fixed. It was a problem local to my Firefox. If there was any connection between it and the RSF feed problem, it is too arcane for me to figure out.

Update – Moving

Thanks to help from many people, we have moved about 95% of the Dream Cafe to its new home in Austin. We have to wait a few days yet for the electricity and other utilities to be turned on, but I’m pretty sure the move will be complete by the middle of next week. Thanks to everyone who helped us move: Andrea the Earth Godess, Robert the Indominatable, Austin the Indefatigable, Jason the Tetrismaster, Toni the Ever Vigilant, Derick the Steady, and Andy the Magnificent.

And also thanks to Toni and Jason and to Nathan’s friend Mandie for Packing Above and Beyond.

Steve’s homepage has not been updated properly in some time, and is in need of a good overhaul. While I have some ideas of my own, and will be talking about with Steve about any he has, I thought I’d see what you, his fans, might like to see there. I can’t promise anything but I am interesting in hearing your thoughts and suggestions. Please note that I am referring only to Steve’s actual homepage itself, dreamcafe.com, not the Words Words Words blog (though I suppose suggestions are welcome on both!).
