The Dream Café Weblog

Redesigning the Dream Café

April 29th, 2009 by kit · 18 Comments

Steve’s homepage has not been updated properly in some time, and is in need of a good overhaul. While I have some ideas of my own, and will be talking about with Steve about any he has, I thought I’d see what you, his fans, might like to see there. I can’t promise anything but I am interesting in hearing your thoughts and suggestions. Please note that I am referring only to Steve’s actual homepage itself, dreamcafe.com, not the Words Words Words blog (though I suppose suggestions are welcome on both!).

I imagine my suggestion to add a link to the CafePress store has already been passed to you. I also set up an Amazon store for Steve, so people could buy used and out-of-print books and he’d still get a cut. It’s at http://astore.amazon.com/dragaera-20 Contact me and I’ll send you the info to administer it.

Other than that, I understand several authors such as C.J. Cherryh are starting to offer ebook versions of their out-of-print works on their websites. (See http://www.cherryh.com/WaveWithoutAShore/?page_id=88 for more info.) I could help with converting Steve’s books to the most popular ebook formats if needed.

Maybe a calender with appearances (book signings, etc.) and conventions Steve might attend? I’ve seen this on other authors’ sites and it’s pretty nifty to find out that they’re going to be in your state and plan yourself a little impromptu road trip. Even if you just listed the conventions that Steve usually goes to each year, that would be great (since there are only X number of conventions a poor starving student can go to each year it would be nice to plan at least one that Steve will be at too).

Elizabeth: In fact, your suggestion was what led to this latest discussion of updates. Kit has added the link to the Words blog already. I like the ebook idea, but I believe all of my stuff is in print at present.

books should like to something like Amazon (store mentioned by Elizabeth). A few photos.

A theme would be good –
What about having the ‘links’ to other sections be different poker chips? (A chip that where it might give denomination says ‘books’)
or icon of book / drum / guitar / …

Stuff that a con might want to know – “to get Steven to be your guest please provide…” or maybe put in a FAQ (What should con suite have on hand (is it still ginger ale, coffee, and rolling rock?)

I like Pooch’s (my other half) top navigation bar
    http://www.picucci.net/Pooch/index.html
    adds consitency to the page

    Firstly

….that I am a Trotskyist sympathizer, and for more information check out The World Socialist Web Site. Enough said.

    Needs to change to:

…that I am a Trotskyist sympathizer, and for more information check out The World Socialist Web Site . Want to discuss? Check out my blog.

    Or words to that affect.

    Secondly

How old is that photo? You got an up to date one?

Don’t forget to update http://dreamcafe.com/books.html ; it’s missing at least one book.

Great suggestions already….I only skimmed but they looked great. I’ll second the links for buying books, calendar, update pic, etc. And then add one: I know there are ways to do it (but I don’t know what they are). I’ve seen websites where we can play a section of or an entire song, and then click to either download an mp3 or buy a cd. I think adding Steve’s musical selection somewhere so we stalkers…er…fans, can be aware of and/or purchase his cd, as well as cat’s laughing (if the other members of that group are amendable to the suggestion).

I look around the site and see a LOT of broken links. I’d suggest replacing those with links that actually go somewhere.

Also, how about some organization; a table of contents to the sub-pages, clearly & concisely presented, easily navigable, and prominently placed.

    Hi All,

Although Steve is best known as a writer and, quite properly, his website reflects this, I also very much enjoy his music. How about having a sample on autoplay when you first click in? Now, although there might be copyright issues with using any of Cat’s Laughing material, anything from A Rose For Iconoclastes should be fair enough (my favorites would be I Was Born About Ten Million Songs Ago or Backwards Message).

I’d also love to be able to order autographed editions directly without bugging you guys .

    All the best,

    JKS

Sorry, I suck… (had additions and/or a redesign worked up ages ago [okay, *years ago], but never got them done.)

..maybe i still have notes on them somewhere.

  • 11 skzb // Apr 30, 2009 at 6:44 pm

Hey, Felix! Good to see you’re still around! If you have those notes, they’d be very useful.

Feel free to snag a pic of a tshirt or Klava mug or whatever from the CafePress shop for a link, if you like. Or I can make you an image that combines several items from the shop. :)

    FLAMES,

Its got to have FLAMES on the sides!

    Just Kidding….sorta…

God help me, a blog could be nice
    A queston and answer section
    A Cooking section…Drool
    A section on Evil Limricks
    FLAMES
    puppies and kittens
    FLAMES
    Perhaps a Panopy of Puns

I will add more if it think of it, You should consider flames around the border. I recall they were very popular during the Diablo period of webdesign.

I love your books, Steve, but I…ahem…have to tell you the portion of your website soliciting donations to yourself is way cheesy. How about a periodic update on your next novel, instead? By the way, I love the poker photo–despite it’s dated nature–so please keep it posted. Very sexy.

Hi there, I would love the site to have an ongoing set of updates regarding the next book(s) in process. As someone who doesn’t get frequent chances to look through the SKZB blogs but anxiously awaits each new Vlad book, it would be nice to have a quick reference to the status (and name when available, but this can be transient with SKZB. hehe). Note, I found this thread searching through to find info on the next book.

14—I say ask for donations! We pay for good reading. Call it insurance on the continuation of the writing. It’s no different than paying for a movie or pre-ordering a video game…

Can I vote for faster? For a mostly text site, it loads and accesses kinda slow.

Not sure if it’s the hardware it’s being hosted on, or if it’s the host… but this low graphic site should load and access faster in my experience.
