Help when Steve returns to Texas

May 31st, 2008 · 5 Comments

Steve loaded up his truck with stuff in Vegas and is driving the truck back here now. When he gets back to town it would be great if any locals reading this would help us out with unloading. We’ll be looking to unload sometime Sunday (tomorrow).
Reply here and we’ll contact you at the email address [...]

Out of Touch

May 28th, 2008 · 2 Comments

Off to Las Vegas.  I’ll be packing Wednesday, loading Thursday, and leaving Friday in the unlikely even that all goes well.  I’ll be out of touch until I get back to Texas, barring the unforseen.
If anyone wants to help me load, mention it here, and Kit and Reesa will tell you how to find the [...]

Marcon

May 26th, 2008 · 11 Comments

I’m back from Marcon, and I’m not sure what to say about it.  As most of you probably know, guest of honor Robert Asprin passed away the day before the convention started.   At opening ceremonies, I said that the odd thing was, if I had spent much of opening ceremonies ribbing him, as I’d originally [...]

Kit & Reesa presenting at Arse Elektronika 2008

May 16th, 2008 · 7 Comments

Reesa and I will be presenting at Arse Elektronika 2008, a conference on sexuality and technology that takes place in San Francisco this September. This year’s theme is “Do Androids Sleep with Electric Sheep?” and deals with the influence of science fiction (and “social fiction”) on technology and the future. Our paper, “What is the [...]

May 16th, 2008 · 25 Comments

On Wednesday, May 28th, I’ll be packing up boxes and such.  On Thursday, May 29th, I’ll be loading a truck and getting ready to leave Vegas.  If anyone feels like helping me load the truck on Thursday, there will be pizza and such provided.
Come to think of it, if anyone feels like helping me pack [...]

Kit reviews Eifelheim by Michael Flynn

May 14th, 2008 · No Comments

I’ve been kind of distracted this month, so I neglected to mention that you can read my review of Michael Flynn’s novel Eifelheim on the SF Site.  I found this novel to be moving and effective and I recomend it highly.

Thank you

May 13th, 2008 · 7 Comments

Some people have been sending me money in response to the request for an investor–sometimes a hundred dollars. I hadn’t been asking for donations; I appreciate them all the more for that. If you sent in a hundred dollars, I think you deserve something spiffy as a thank you; Reesa and Kit [...]

Auctioning off Jhegaala bound galley

May 11th, 2008 · 21 Comments

So, after I was convinced that reviewers putting bound galleys up for sale wasn’t the dastardly act I’d thought it was (thanks, Patrick), the next obvious step was to do it myself.  The ebay auction can be found here.

Personality, Perception, and Political Prognosis

May 9th, 2008 · 14 Comments

I’ve been re-reading Trotsky’s three volume History of the Russian Revolution. In chapter IV and chapter VI he gets into the personality of the Czar and the Czarina in a discussion of how much of the personality of a leader is accidental, and how much is determined by circumstances: in particular, the circumstances of [...]

Free-for-all #3

May 9th, 2008 · 44 Comments

It was either this or a long post on the materialist interpretation of human personality as related to the leaders of classes doomed to extinction.  Aren’t you glad it’s this?

Prejudice, thy name is Steve

May 9th, 2008 · 32 Comments

He was big, looked to be between 45-50, had a typical Texas drawl and a rodeo belt buckle.  He was in Reesa’s store buying a tatoo for his wife, and I was hanging around and keeping Reesa company.  He looked at me as I walked in and said, “Do I know you from somewhere?”  “Can’t [...]

Investment Opportunity (no, really)

May 3rd, 2008 · 17 Comments

This is the slow time–I’m waiting on a royalty check, and the on-publication money for Gigolo, and the bankruptcy to be resolved.  Meanwhile, Reesa’s store is going through the slow months while the college is out.  This produces what capitalists call a “cash-flow problem.”
So, we’re looking for someone who wants to invest 10 to 15k [...]
