UFOs (from the abuse of language dept)

February 4th, 2008 by kit · 7 Comments

I am hanging out at Poking You tonight and one of the artists brought up some recent UFO sightings here in Texas. I did a Google search and found this news article. While it is full of colorful details (I particularly like the guy who watched the object through his gun sights and is sure it had no “seams, nuts or bolts”), one part really jumped out at me:

In this farming community where nightfall usually brings clear, starry skies, residents are abuzz over reported sightings of what many believe is a UFO.

Let’s look at that last sentence — ‘what many believe is a UFO.’ What does UFO stand for? Unidentified Flying Object. It was a thing people saw (an object), moving through the sky (flying) and no one knows what it is (unidentified). I realize journalists have to write like this (suspects rather than criminals for instance) but this is out of hand: while we could spend all day speculating on what the thing was, I think we can say with assurance that it was a UFO.

The truth is out there.

What I want to know is, why are higher life forms from other parts of the universe so interested in traveling across the space/time continuum to anal probe Americans and virtually no other nationality?

It seems like UFO has become equivalent to ‘alien spacecraft’.

(And it sounded like some people didn’t think it was a UFO — because they thought it was an alien spacecraft, so they had ‘identified’ it.)

It looks like the government fessed up to the sighting being military related. If you believe the government that is. Perhaps they were chasing the real ufos…

Homer: Are you going to…probe me?

Kang: No! We have reached the limits of what can be learned through rectal probing!
